Migrating My Media to a New Computer

If you are replacing your server or switching to different hardware, you can carry your entire My Media configuration — watch folders, playlists, overrides, and settings — across to the new machine.

Decommission the Old Computer First

Do not run My Media on both computers at the same time with the same data. Both services will share the same My Media server ID, which will confuse the pairing with your Amazon account. Follow the steps in order.

Steps

  1. Stop My Media on the old computer and make a note of any watch folder paths you have configured so you can set them up identically on the new machine.

  2. Uninstall My Media on the old computer. This prevents it from starting automatically if the machine is turned on again later.

  3. Copy the My Media data directory to the same path on the new computer:

    PlatformData directory
    WindowsC:\Program Files\MyMediaForAlexa
    macOS~/.MyMediaForAlexa
    Linux~/.MyMediaForAlexa
  4. Install My Media on the new computer using the installer for your platform. Because the data directory already exists, the installer will pick up your existing configuration rather than starting fresh.

  5. Open the My Media web console at http://localhost:52051 and verify that your watch folders, playlists, and settings are all present.

  6. Trigger a rescan from the Watch Folders screen. If the music files are stored at the same paths on the new machine, the library will rebuild quickly and your existing configuration will be fully restored.

Music Files on a NAS

If your music lives on a network-attached storage device (NAS) rather than on the My Media computer itself, no file copying is needed — both the old and new computers point at the same NAS share. Just ensure the new computer has the same network access to the share and that any mapped drives are recreated in My Media's settings.
