Troubleshooting Alexa Accuracy
Alexa Doesn't Recognise My Media as a Skill
After installing the My Media server software on your computer, you also need to enable the My Media skill in the Alexa app for each device you want to use.
- Open the Alexa app on your phone or go to alexa.amazon.com.
- Go to Skills & Games and search for My Media.
- Select My Media for Alexa and tap Enable.
Once enabled, try your voice command again. If Alexa still does not respond, check that the skill is enabled on the same Amazon account that your Echo device is registered to.
Alexa Responds But No Music Plays
If Alexa acknowledges your request but then falls silent, see the dedicated guide:
Troubleshooting: Alexa Responds But No Music Plays
It covers the ten most common causes, including firewall rules, network configuration, VPN conflicts, and the Windows 10 Alexa app loopback issue.
I Can't Locate My iTunes Library File
iTunes 12.2 and later no longer share the iTunes Library XML file with third-party applications by default. My Media needs this file to read your iTunes library.
To enable it:
- Open iTunes (or Apple Music on macOS Catalina and later).
- Open Preferences — on macOS choose iTunes → Preferences (or Music → Preferences); on Windows choose Edit → Preferences.
- Click the Advanced tab.
- Check "Share iTunes Library XML with other applications".
- Click OK.
- Restart the My Media service and then trigger a rescan from the Watch Folders screen.
See iTunes & Apple Music for full details on configuring iTunes with My Media.
Alexa Doesn't Recognise Some Albums or Artists
When Alexa mishears a name or finds no results, the Dashboard can help you diagnose the problem.
- Open the My Media web console and go to Dashboard.
- Click Refresh on the Recent Alexa Play Requests widget.
- Check the Heard column — this shows the exact text Alexa sent to My Media.
- If the heard text is wrong (a speech recognition error), try speaking more slowly and clearly, or use a slightly different phrasing.
- If the heard text is correct but nothing was found, go to the Albums or Artists page in My Media and confirm the item is indexed under exactly that name. Check the ID3 tags on the audio files if it is missing.
- If there is a consistent mismatch between what Alexa hears and what the library contains, create an Override to map the spoken phrase to the correct library term.
